In 2016, federal grants were obtained allowing the agency to purchase top-of-the-line, personally-fitted body armor, new service weapons and shotguns for each sworn deputy. Deputies were providing their own ammunition and firearms training was nonexistent. DEPUTY SAFETYĭue to budget constraints, body armor was not provided to agency personnel and agency weapons were in poor condition. The primary mission is to make the residents feel safe in their homes, work places and on the roadways by reducing crime through prevention and enforcement efforts. The sheriff’s office strives to maintain the highest standard of integrity in order to promote public trust within its agency. Thomas and his wife Beckye have a son, Brandon, a daughter-in-law, Annalise and a Dalmatian named Melody.The Knox County Sheriff’s Office consists of seven full-time sworn deputies, which includes a captain, sergeant and school-resource officer one part-time administrative assistant seven court-security officers and three administrative clerks. He has been a member of the Tennessee, Southeastern and American Associations of School Business Officials, the Tennessee Association of School Personnel Administrators, the Phi Delta Kappa Professional Education Fraternity and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. Thomas served as the Executive Director of the Distinguished Professionals Education Institute from 2010 to 2016. He also served as a member of the Professional Educator Collaborative Conferencing Act Team. Most recently, he served as Assistant Superintendent with the oversight of charter school applications, exploration of opening a Recovery High School, implementation of the new payroll/human resources system and assisted in resolving challenging employee issues. His responsibilities included overseeing the following departments: finance, human resources, maintenance and operations, transportation, information technology, school security, school nutrition and facilities. In 1990, he became the Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Human Resources. In 1988, he was promoted to supervisor in the Personnel Department of the Knox County Schools. He joined the administrative staff as a Personnel Specialist with the Knoxville City Schools in 1985. Thomas moved into school administration at Rule High School where he served first as an assistant principal and then as principal. Thomas was named Bearden High School’s Teacher of the Year in 1982. While at Bearden High School, he served as the Athletic Director and assistant coach for football and track. As a high school teacher, he taught general business, accounting, business law, business math and health classes. Thomas began his career with Knoxville City Schools as a teacher at Bearden Junior High and then at Bearden High School. With more than 44 years in education, Mr. Additionally, he completed extensive course work beyond his Master’s degree in Educational Administration and Supervision at the University of Tennessee. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Master of Science in Education. Thomas is a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Thomas will focus on three “non-negotiable” priorities: enhancing student achievement, creating a positive culture and eliminating disparities. He officially took the seat on April 6, 2017.Īs superintendent, Mr. Superintendent Bob Knox County Board of Education appointed Bob Thomas as superintendent of Knox County Schools during a special-called meeting in March 2017.
